Clacton-on-sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex and was founded in 1871. The now evolving town as a seaside resort once saw a peak of tourists in the summer months between the 1950s and 1970s. A £36million coastal regeneration project in 2015, stretching 5km from Clacton to Holland-on-Sea, created 23 beautiful new beaches and the pier has had significant investment, both making the resort a destination holiday spot once again.
Its beaches, air show and pier are most popular with tourists in the summer and there is an annual entertainment programme including the Clacton Carnival. Clacton Airshow, an aerial display, takes place on the Thursday and Friday before the August Bank Holiday, with historic and modern aircraft such as the Lancaster, Spitfire, Hurricane, Harrier, Jaguar, Tornado, and helicopters. There are also wing-walkers and the Red Arrows.
The jewell in the crown are the pier and pavilion which have both been significantly revamped over more recently years. For the pier and probably most noticeably are the traditional Helter Skelter and the Stella’s Revenge Roller Coaster, adventure golf and 10 Pin Bowling with lounge and bar. For the pavilion there is a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, swinging pirate ship, water park and 10 Pin Bowling. Both areas have multiple dining and food outlets.
